Menopause – The signs you need to look for

In today’s post, I am going to be talking about something that affects so many of us, and yet is one of those subjects that is brushed under the carpet and never really properly talked about openly. Starting menopause is such a huge chapter in the lives of us women, but many still feel that talking about periods and the menopause is a taboo subject. Starting menopause does not only see a woman experience huge physical changes but it is also a time of emotional change as well.

Woman sat thinking

So, what actually is menopause? It is the time when a woman will stop having periods and is no longer able to get pregnant naturally. Many women experience other symptoms of menopause, including the well-known symptoms of hot flushes, night sweats, and lack of concentration, but there are many more symptoms that are less well known but can also cause a lot of stress and discomfort.

Irregular Periods

When a woman no longer has periods, this is the time that is officially known as menopause, but in the years leading up to this, which can be known as the perimenopause – your periods can become more irregular and can change to either very heavy periods or even a barely-there period.

Poor Sleep

Insomnia is known to be one of the biggest concerns through menopause. Night sweats and general anxiety can contribute to disturbed sleep, and a lack of sleep can have a real knock-on effect on the rest of our lives and our ability to concentrate on everyday tasks.

Mood Swings

With reduced oestrogen levels, women experiencing menopause can also experience erratic mood changes. Experiencing depression, anxiety and irritability are all common during the menopause. Some women will experience a feeling of being totally overwhelmed and feel like they just can’t cope with everything.

Lack of Focus and Concentration

With stress and anxiety being one of the main issues of menopause, it is without doubt that many women will also experience a lack of focus and concentration, even when doing simple everyday tasks. Ensuring you get good sleep, try and incorporate some daily exercise into your routine, and Vitamin B, which is known to help boost mental function, can help to maintain optimum levels of focus.
