Title: Cynthia Smart’s Midwife Crisis
Author: Liz Davies
Genre: Chick Lit
My Rating: 5 out of 5
Synopsis
Midlife crisis? What midlife crisis?
At forty-four, Cynthia Smart is exactly where she wants to be. Almost.
In a couple of years, she’ll be the CEO of the company she’s spent her most of her adult life working in. For now, though, she’s still busy shimmying up the greasy pole of corporate business. She’s single, carefree, and independent, and nothing can stop her getting what she wants and deserves. Until she discovers she’s pregnant.
Determined to have her cake and eat it, she’s convinced that having a baby will make little difference to her life, and that she will be one of those women who can hold down an incredibly demanding job and also be a perfect mother.
But as her pregnancy progresses and her life slowly falls apart, she has the sneaking suspicion that Max Oakland, the new guy on the block, is out to steal her dream job. That she’s terribly attracted to him doesn’t help, nor does the fact that he’s devilishly handsome, appears to be a really nice fella, and is good in a crisis.
When she gradually comes to realise that something has got to give, what she doesn’t want it to be is her heart.
My Review
This book had me laughing out loud right from the very start. Cynthia Smart is a very hard-working career orientated woman. She has worked hard to prove herself worthy of a promotion which she deserves in a very male-dominated business. That is, until she discovers she is pregnant and realises she will be a single mum in her mid 40’s. Determined that the baby will just fit into her current busy life, Cynthia carries on as normal. As the pregnancy continues, we see Cynthia start to change her way of thinking and become more focused on her growing baby and less worried about work and her career.
Even though Cynthia is now more focused on her growing baby, she is angry when Max joins the company. Cynthia sees Max as a threat and that he is about to steal her promotion from under her nose. However, Max is insistent that he is not after the promotion. The two of them spend time together working on projects, the chemistry between the two of them gathers pace. With everyone telling Cynthia that Max has feelings for her, she just doesn’t believe it. Until she realises, she has fallen for Max in a big way. I won’t give anything away, but the ending of this story is just magical.
Cynthia Smart’s Midwife Crisis is a fun light-hearted read, with brilliantly written characters in Cynthia and Max. The story tackles some interesting areas in a very sensitive and also light-hearted way. I would totally recommend this book to anyone and I really loved every second of this funny and happy story.
