My Top Tips When Moving House

Couple exchanging keys

Moving house is known to be one of the most stressful (and most expensive) things in life, and having moved house just 3 weeks ago, I can definitely agree! Follow my Top Tips and hopefully you will have a stress-free and a more organised house move.

GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME

You think you will have enough time to pack, but take it from me, whatever time you think it will take, give yourself more! I thought I could pack a 3 bed town house in just a few days before my move. What I didn’t bank on with it being the hottest day of the year, is that packing and moving boxes in insane heat leaves you completely drained and exhausted. Always give yourself more time than you think you will need – you can thank me later for this tip!

GET A GOOD SUPPLY OF BOXES AND TAPE

Boxes will become your new best friend, so make sure you invest in some good quality strong boxes. You can buy packing boxes from many places now, including Argos and Wilko. I was very lucky and managed to secure some large and strong boxes from my workplace, but I did also buy some more boxes as I didn’t have quite enough. Along with strong boxes, make sure you have good quality packing tape to secure all your boxes.

LISTS, LISTS AND MORE LISTS!

Lists are the best way to keep a track of everything you need to do in the lead up to the big move. I created Excel spreadsheets with all the things I needed to do for the move, all the people I needed to let know my new address, and all the utility companies I needed to contact to let them know about changing addresses.

USE A GOOD REMOVALS COMPANY

Do your research on removal companies. I had 3 companies come and do a survey on the house and contents, and provide me with a quote for the cost of the removals. It made the world of difference on moving day having the removal company basically do all the work, and made moving day a whole lot easier and not quite so exhausting!
