I have recently been diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic – which to be honest was a massive shock to me. My twin sister has been Type 1 Diabetic for over 10 years now – but I have always been ok when I have had checks done at the GP.
I am currently waiting to see the Diabetic Nurse at my GP Practise to find out what my treatment plan will be, but in the mean time I have decided to try and take control of things myself.
The best thing to manage Diabetes is to lose weight and eat healthily, so in the last week I have made 2 quite huge lifestyle choices and I am hoping that they will really help me to take control of things again.
I have joined a gym – I have an amazing Virgin Active Gym literally just round the corner from where I live – which now has ME as a member! Yes, I have joined the gym – I am most certainly not going to become one of those ‘Gym Bunnies’ who practically live there, but Virgin Active offer some fantastic fitness classes (Step, Pilates, Yoga, Clubbercise, Zumba) they have a brilliant gym area and a great swimming pool – and I really am a swimming lover (I always said that I should have been a water baby as I LOVE being in the water!)
I have been swimming twice this week, and clocked up 40 lengths each time. Next week I have already booked a Pilates Class, a Clubbercise class and planning on going swimming a few times too.
I am really hoping that by exercising more, I can help to lose weight and manage my Diabetes effectively.
The second change I have made is that I have joined Slimming World. I have finally got to the point where I KNOW I need to lose weight – not only to help my Diabetes, but to help my general health as well. I went to my first session last Friday – everyone was really friendly and encouraging and I am determined to make changes. I am going on holiday in September this year, and would like to have lost a considerable amount of weight by then.
I’m hoping to have lost at least 3 pounds on my first week – Friday is D-Day!
I really hope that with these changes I have made I am able to start taking control of my Diabetes and become a lot happier and healthier person. I had a really bad 2016 in various different ways, and I didn’t really take care of myself physically or mentally, so I know 2017 has to be very different.
